The Philippines is the only country whose independence day is celebrated on a different day every year. It is a day that brings back memories of the Philippine Revolution (1896-1901), and was declared as a national holiday in 1978 by former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. In this blog post, we showcase how modern Filipino (and some international) celebrities are inspired from the terno designs during the past and how it remains as a strong part of their fashionable wardrobes.
The Terno’s History
According to historians, the terno dress has been through it all.
It evolved from the early Spanish colonial period (1700s), the revolution against Spain and the Philippine American War (Victorian Era), the American Colonial period, two World Wars, past the atomic age, through the authoritarian rule of the Marcos regime, and now its resurgence into the modern-day ternos worn by some of the most coveted Filipina beauty such as Liza Soberano, Kathryn Bernardo, Lovi Poe and Heart Evangelista – all beautiful and every bit a modern Filipina.
Let’s have a look into how Filipino celebrities showcase their flair wearing the Philippine national costume during shows, events and even politics-related shenanigans:

Back in 2019, Liza Soberano was spotted wearing a beautiful Patricia Santos gown at the ABS-CBN ball. She was definitely mesmerizing in her dazzling nude ensemble which highlights her beauty even more.

Meanwhile, here’s a flaming fuchsia Michael Cinco gown worn by none other than Kathryn Bernardo at the ABS-CBN ball back in 2019. The actress kept things simple but glamorous by opting for some red lips and classic fringes.
Lovi Poe in a classic black terno.
Lovi Poe, on the other hand, opted for a classic black terno wearing a beautiful Albert Andrada piece. She wore this stunning terno during the 2018 TernoCon.
Heart Evangelista in a classic Mark Bumgarner white terno.
Here’s chic and sassy Heart Evangelista in a timeless Mark Bumgarner white terno for SONA 2018 – accessorized with a classic Hermes Kelly handbag. The celebrity and wife of Senator Chiz Escudero looked every bit a politician wife with her regal albeit modern take on the Filipiniana-inspired dress.
In case you’re looking to wear a Filipiniana dress anytime soon, we’ve perfected the mix of vintage and modern terno dressing. While the Filipiniana dress is a beautiful and elegant choice for any formal occasion, it can also be worn in a more casual way. We’d love to see more modern-day Filipinas wearing the beautiful ternos, too!
The terno is indeed a beautiful piece of Filipino heritage. Not only does it symbolize the Filipino culture but it also embodies the pride and heritage of the Philippines.
